Pablo Carpio (b. Madrid, 1979) is a visual artist who has developed his practice in New York, Berlin, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City, and currently works from Madrid.
His work approaches painting as a territory of material investigation: pronounced reliefs, dense textures, and gestures that transform the pictorial surface into an object with physical presence. In his work, painting ceases to be representation and becomes autonomous reality —matter that occupies space and interrogates it.
Carpio's process maintains a constant dialogue with the sculptural. The artist's action and the resistance of materials are negotiated in each piece, generating abstract landscapes that emerge from that tension. Each work unfolds as an act with a beginning and an end: gestures are rehearsed, repeated, improvised and transformed, building a surface where each mark finds its place alongside the others.
The result offers the viewer a simultaneously visual and tactile experience: the work is seen and sensed with the body. Facing his works, one may experience something close to an encounter with a natural phenomenon. Something that happens before you, that cannot be explained but must be moved through.
In a moment of digital image saturation, Carpio asserts the trace of gesture and the irreducible power of matter. A tension that runs through his own practice: his works are paintings that overflow the plane, as if the image, pushed to its limit, wanted to become an object.
